Description
Please join us on Wednesday, September 22 at Park Place Hotel as we honor and celebrate the 2020 Distinguished Service Award recipient, Jan Warren.
Jan Warren
Jan Warren, the former program director for Northwest Michigan Works!, is the recipient of the 2020 Distinguished Service Award. The DSA is among the region?s oldest and most prestigious civic awards, presented annually since 1929.
Jan Warren began her career in public service with the Michigan Department of Education after graduating from Michigan State University. In addition to a BA in Sociology, she earned an MBA from Lake Superior University. After relocating from southern Michigan in 1979, Jan joined the Northwest Michigan Council of Governments, now known as Networks Northwest. Jan served as the program director of Northwest Michigan Works! for seven years before entering part-time retirement in 2013, when she re-joined the staff of Networks Northwest as the Management Support Specialist. She also worked for Planned Parenthood and established the Traverse City affiliate office.
During her career, Jan has been very active in community organizations. In fact, Jan?s five decades of volunteer service to nonprofit organizations and government boards and commissions include 19 years on the Traverse City Planning Commission and six years on the Joint Planning Commission for the Grand Traverse Commons. She is a past president of the National Cherry Festival, Women?s Resource Center, Grand Traverse Community Collaborative, and the League of Women Voters of the Grand Traverse Area. She currently serves on the boards of the Traverse City Opera House, Grand Traverse Pavilions Foundation, and the United Way Citizens? Advisory Committee. Jan is the 2004 Athena Award recipient and the Grand Traverse County Planning Commission?s 2016 Frank Purvis Stewardship Award winner.
Jan?s dedication to the communities of the Grand Traverse Region has had widespread, lasting impacts, and she is known by everyone she meets for her generosity and humble service.
About the DSA Award: The award is a 90-year tradition that annually recognizes a local resident for his or her efforts to improve the lives of people living and working in the Grand Traverse area. The DSA honors business leaders, public servants, patrons of area arts, naturalists, and those from a host of other backgrounds who've worked and given tirelessly to improve the region, according to Traverse Connect.
