Description
The Women in Business Book Club is more than your average book club. We pick a book full of inspiration and actionable tips each Spring and Fall.
We gather over the course of three sessions for discussion, live exercises as a group, listen to amazing speakers live, and have our facilitators focus on helping you not just read a book but really walk away with clear steps to implement the key takeaways that you've learned.
Our Spring session members will be reading Nine Lies about Work by Marcus Buckingham and Ashley Goodall. This book turns conventional workplace wisdom on its head and shows you what you really need to focus on to have harmony, productivity, and happiness in the workplace. Hint: it starts by overcoming all that you think you know about work and what matters.
Book:
Nine Lies About Work: A Freethinking Leader's Guide to the Real World
by Marcus Buckingham and Ashley Goodall
Nine Lies dives into a big unanswered question: Why is it that many of the ideas and practices which are pretty much held as universal truths are actually deeply unpopular with and intensely frustrating to the people they are supposed to serve? This book covers topics like performance reviews and how they're ineffective and how being well-rounded is overrated. An easily readable fascinating book that's a must for any employee or manager who has ever thought there must be a better way. There is, and this book shows how outdated ways of doing business are holding us all back from our full potential.
Speakers:
Sabrina Morrice, Founder & CEO
Anchorlight Creative
I'm a digital strategist, marketing coach & process expert. I am 100% obsessed with helping women creatives put their best digital foot forward and calming the chaos that comes with running a small business. Those things you hate? I probably love them. I love workflows, telling stories through marketing and helping women succeed and make an impact in the world.
After leaving the corporate world and founding Anchorlight Creative in 2013, I have been working with creative, entrepreneurial women, building beautiful websites, creating strategies for growth and helping them scale their businesses intentionally and with joy.
More on me? I have two terrific kids, two needy GSDs, a brilliant tech wizard of a husband who is the handiest man alive, and a deep love for dark chocolate with hazelnuts, traveling the world and a penchant for buying all the books at every bookstore I stop in at. I love summer and my best life is on a Leland beach with friends and a Good Harbor Pinot Noir Rosé in hand.
Annie Zimmerman, Lead Small Business Strategist
Anchorlight Creative
Hi! Annie here. I am the lead small business strategist and consultant. I started this journey with Anchorlight in 2019 after shuttering my own brick and mortar business in Traverse City. I mean it when I say I understand the complexities and insecurities of being a small business owner. I've been there, done that and although my path here has been a winding one, I have finally found my calling. It gives me so much joy to guide fellow entrepreneurs in their journey to success and business confidence.
I am a Traverse City native who lived in Chicago for six years before moving back. My husband and I are high school sweethearts and have an Australian Cattle Dog rescue pup, Luna. We are very outdoorsy and try to squeeze a hike in whenever our schedule allows.
