In this position, you’ll provide a range of carpentry services, including rough and finish carpentry, home remodel projects, maintenance repairs, roofing, and more in a maintenance setting. You’ll be responsible for ensuring all carpentry work meets established guidelines and standards while contributing to the preservation and improvement of our historic and evolving campus.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs planned & requested repairs/restorations of campus buildings & facilities.

  • Handles interior & exterior renovations, including modifications to existing sites & new construction (Team & Individual projects). Tasks could include; drywall hanging & finishing, roofing & siding buildings with use of ladders or scaffolding, wood and/or metal stud wall installation, acoustical ceiling installation.

  • Follows all Interlochen Center for the Arts & MIOSHA safety standards

  • Responds to typical & emergency work order requests

  • Maintain inventory supply levels required to provide efficient response to work requests.

  • After hours emergency response team roles are possible ie: major roof leak.

  • Prioritize assignments to optimize use of resources & space availability.

  • Seeks the best use of materials, equipment and staff to maximize efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Complies with ICA policies/procedures and acts as a good steward of ICA finances.

  • Respects the culture, diversity and rights of all students, their families and the community.

  • Prioritizes duties in a manner consistent with organizational objectives and growth.

  • Work well in a TEAM environment.  3-4 carpenters in the crew but will work closely with all the other ICA trade workers.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Environment:

Work is performed primarily in an ever changing environment with extensive internal and external stakeholder contact. This would involve working inside and outside of buildings, moving all over campus.

 

Required Skills and Experience:

Education: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is preferred

Experience: Five years of responsible experience in building maintenance and repair or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience preferred. Good skill in the use of hand and power tools required.

Equipment Familiarity: Mac tablet, Google Suite, MS Office Suite - a plus

Certifications, Licenses or Special Training: 

  • Must meet and maintain background screening requirements as detailed in policy 12.HR.01 Pre-Employment and Employee Background Checks. 

  • Valid driver’s license is required

  • Driving record that meets the eligibility requirements of ICA’s insurance carrier (for all positions requiring driving).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Strong rough and/or finish carpentry skills - preferred but willing to train the right candidate.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public; ability to follow written and verbal instructions

  • Working knowledge of light and some heavy equipment operation principles, practices and procedures

  • This may include operating motorized vehicles and equipment including dump truck, pickup truck, utility truck, backhoe, tractors, electric motors, motorized lifts, ladders, common hand & power tools, shovels, wrenches, radio & phone

  • Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to the position; working knowledge of minor equipment maintenance and repair functions

  • Ability to handle wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions.

  • Ability to handle a work environment that is usually moderate to occasionally loud.   Personal Protection Equipment use is expected & provided in these instances.

  • Ability to hang and finish drywall is preferred.

  • Ability to follow and execute specific verbal and written instructions.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to promote and maintain positive interaction with all internal and external stakeholders.
