Position Summary: The Director of Campus Safety provides direction and oversight for all functions and activities of Interlochen’s Campus Safety and Transportation, including patrolling Interlochen’s 1200 acre campus, concert / special event traffic and parking, guest transportation needs, investigations, emergency preparedness, and other safety support services. The Director of Campus Safety coordinates assigned activities and fosters collaborative working relationships with other departments, outside agencies, regulatory agencies, local emergency responders and the public.

Recruit, select, train, supervise and evaluate a diverse department of security officers and transportation drivers, in a department that operates around the clock, 365 days a year.
Provides effective professional liaison between internal and external stakeholders to ensure the promotion of goodwill, cooperation, and open communications between the department and the community at large.
Train security staff in customer service expectations, patrol procedures, reporting and documentation, proper investigation techniques, campus key and lock systems, crowd management and traffic control.
Works collaboratively with other hospitality team leaders to ensure a cohesive and exceptional customer service experience between lodging, safety, transportation, retail and dining services for all stakeholders.
Leadership in planning, organization and implementation of campus wide emergency procedures, documentation, lockdown and severe weather/fire preparedness drills, recommending changes to procedures, processes, equipment, facilities.
Compliance with all state and federal requirements, Homeland Security and Michigan Safe Schools requirements, mandated lockdown drills.
Serves as a spokesperson for campus safety and security at events, meetings, and other activities; makes presentations to the Board of Trustees and a variety of other boards and commissions. Participants in Interlochen’s Safety Committee and provides oversight to campus-wide safety curriculum.
Supervise the transportation coordinator in the delivery of transportation for student and guest needs.
Consultation and support for some student affairs processes, including student violation of the law.
Interface with local, state and federal law enforcement and fire safety personnel.
Tracks and distributes reports of incidents for resolution by various departments that may require law enforcement, student discipline, employee discipline, etc. to the appropriate campus departments. Prepares quarterly summaries for the executive management team and recommends policy and procedure changes based on trends.
Exercise judgment in answering day to day procedural questions, who can be granted building/room access, methods to patrol campus, etc.
Manages and participates in the development, administration, and documentation of assigned budget; directs the forecast of additional funds needed for staffing, vehicles, equipment, and supplies; directs the monitoring of and approves expenditures; and directs the preparation and implementation of budgetary adjustments.
Works with our Philanthropy team to identify funding sources for Safety and Transportation opportunities.
Seeks the best use of materials, equipment and staff to maximize efficiency and effectiveness.
Responsible for making sure our technologies and infrastructure systems are up to date with coordination with ICA’s IT department.
Complies with ICA policies/procedures and acts as a good steward of ICA finances.
Respects the culture, diversity and rights of all students, their families and the community.
Prioritizes duties in a manner consistent with organizational objectives and growth .

Required Experience and Abilities:
Bachelor's degree in public safety, safety and environmental health, or criminal justice preferred. May substitute experience for formal education.
Minimum of five (5) years experience in a similar role, such as public safety or other governmental organization.
Minimum of five (5) years of experience coordinating safety work with external agencies, including but not limited to law enforcement, community partners, and emergency responders.
AED/CPR/First Aid certification
Experience in a school or campus setting is preferred.
Professional development and training certifications in emergency management from FEMA, NEMA or related agencies are a plus.
Demonstrated experience in emergency management and security programs, services and emergency preparedness initiatives.
Demonstrated cultural awareness, including knowledge of themselves and the cultural lenses they bring to interactions. Ability to understand different perspectives, interact respectfully with cultures other than their own, and cultivate meaningful relationships with people who have had different cultural frameworks.
Familiarity with protocols for communication and working with local, state and federal law enforcement, life safety, environmental and public health agencies.
Ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff, administrators, parents and guardians, alumni, trustees, and independent contractors.

Ability to supervise, develop and motivate, all with a good sense of humor.
Ability to build effective relationships both within and outside the institution.
