Interlochen Center for the Arts is looking to hire a Head of the Fennell Music Library. The Fennell Music Library serves the music program of two world-renowned programs, Interlochen Arts Camp and Interlochen Arts Academy. It includes extensive orchestral, band, choral, chamber music, jazz, scores, and recordings collections. The Head of the Fennell Music Library’s leadership is key to ensuring that the Fennell Music Library meets the individual and programmatic needs of the Interlochen Arts Camp and Interlochen Arts Academy.

Interactions with the library staff

  • Builds meaningful relationships with faculty, staff, and students.

  • Assists patrons in finding information.

  • Provides a collection that reflects and anticipates patrons’ needs.

  • Creates a welcoming atmosphere.

This position works closely with the Director of Libraries and other library staff members to provide these services to the ICA community.

Essential Duties:

  • Provide direction and establish vision for the Fennell Music Library

  • Coordinate with faculty from various arts divisions on programmatic needs for Academy and Camp

  • Oversee the acquisition and preparation of parts and scores for Academy and Camp ensembles

  • Manage the annual budget

  • Supervise and evaluate year-round staff

  • Hire, train, and supervise additional interns for each Camp season

  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with faculty

  • Oversee Music Library collections (scores, solo repertoire, audio materials, and music databases)

  • Provide a high level of reference to students, faculty, and staff

  • Create and teach library studio sessions

  • Collaborate with the Director of Libraries and library staff on special projects dealing with outreach, programming, and other library initiatives

  • Participate in school-wide committee/volunteer work as appropriate

  • Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required

  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment:

Work is performed primarily in a standard office and library environment with extensive internal and external stakeholder contact.

Required Skills and Experience:

Education:

  • ALA-accredited MLIS required

  • Bachelor’s degree in music required; master’s degree preferred

Experience: 3-5 years of experience

  • Experience working in a music library

  • Experience working in an ensemble library

  • Progressive managerial experience in a library

  • Proficient in using music notation software (Sibelius, Dorico)

  • Proficient in using and teaching music databases

  • Knowledgeable in current copyright and licensing standards

  • Understanding of both the current and future trends and practices in libraries

Equipment Familiarity:

  • Google Drive Suite

  • Music notation software (Sibelius, Dorico) - Required

  • Adobe Creative Cloud (Acrobat, Photoshop) - Required

  • Koha

  • Mac OS

Certifications, Licenses or Special Training: 

  • Must meet and maintain background screening requirements as detailed in policy 12.HR.01 Pre-Employment and Employee Background Checks. 

  • Valid driver’s license and driving record that meets the eligibility requirements of ICA’s insurance carrier (for all positions requiring driving).
