Big Brothers Big Sisters Announces Bigs of the Year

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwestern Michigan (Bigs) is proud to announce the 2025 Big Brother and Big Sister of the Year, recognizing two exceptional volunteer mentors who have made a lasting impact on the lives of local youth. Steve Niergarth and Rachel Roe were voted Big Brother and Big Sister of the Year for Antrim, Grand Traverse, and Kalkaska Counties.

Each year, Bigs honors outstanding mentors who exemplify the power of connection and the life-changing impact of one-to-one mentoring. Nominated by community members across the region, these Bigs demonstrate extraordinary commitment to their Littles and to the mission of empowering potential through mentorship.

“It’s a privilege to celebrate the transformative connections and growth we witness between our Bigs and Littles. Steve and Rachel embody the heart of our mission—showing how mentorship, consistency, and compassion can change lives. Their dedication reminds us that when adults invest their time and care, our entire community grows stronger,” shared Cecilia Chesney, CEO of Bigs.

Bigs will celebrate Steve and Rachel on Thursday, January 29, from 4:30–6:00 p.m. at The Filling Station in Traverse City. The event is free and open to the public, offering an opportunity to meet the honorees, connect with mentors, and learn more about becoming a Big.

Steve Niergarth, Big Brother of the Year, shared, “I’ve really enjoyed these last seven years with my Little Brother Asher. It’s great seeing him grow on his journey toward becoming a terrific young man. I’m humbled to be honored as Big Brother of the Year, as I feel like I’ve gotten even more out of being a Big Brother than what I’ve put in. I really want to encourage others to consider being a Big—you won’t regret it.”

Rachel Roe, Big Sister of the Year, said, “I’m so incredibly honored to be selected as a Big of the Year! There’s nothing more important for the future of our community than our young people. Every young person needs a tribe of caring, consistent, positive adult role models. I’m privileged to be a Big and to experience the world again through a child’s eyes. I definitely get more than I give!”
